Prefix linked to a free Soviet Punk Anthology. It’s 36 tracks by 36 artists and has some real gems in there. The bands from this era were socially rebellious as well and were often broke and, according to music ruined my life, their “records were commonly homemade using discarded medical X-rays.”

Nels Cline’s Stained Radiance

Not a perfect video, but a video of an amazing performance from a new Nels Cline (Wilco) project. The project is ethereal, loosely called free jazz, but equal parts ambient and noise as well. The group is a painter and Nels on guitar. Here’s a performance from (Le) Poisson Rouge for the 2011 Winter Jazz Fest from NPR.

Archers of Loaf Reunite

The Archers of Loaf haven’t played a show in 13 years, since their “hiatus” in 1998. But they made an appearance in their home of Chapel Hill on Saturday night when they opened for local group The Love Language at Carrboro’s Cat’s Cradle. A YouTube user named mumblepop captured the show and posted videos as well as a full set list (see below). The band played a lot of their classics and don’t appear to have any plans for another show, but you have to imagine one is happening. (Though I’ve no evidence to support that.)

RIP Trish Keenan

According to a statement at the Warp Records site:

It is with great sadness we announce that Trish Keenan from Broadcast passed away at 9am this morning in hospital. She died from complications with pneumonia after battling the illness for two weeks in intensive care. Our thoughts go out to James, Martin, her friends and her family and we request that the public respect their wishes for privacy at this time. This is an untimely tragic loss and we will miss Trish dearly – a unique voice, an extraordinary talent and a beautiful human being. Rest in Peace.

The Black Keys vs. Vampire Weekend

Last night on The Colbert Report Stephen Colbert started casting his votes for the Grammys (as a past winner he gets a vote). For the Alternative Rock category he brought out The Black Keys and Ezra of Vampire Weekend to have a “sell-out off” where the bands compared the number of commercials their songs appeared in this year. The whole thing devolves into a West Side Story style street battle, sans finger snapping.
